Zanzibar sourcing gap — this guide is marked “Applies to: Mainland Tanzania & Zanzibar”, but every authority cited below is Mainland-scoped and we have not independently confirmed a Zanzibar-specific process for this commodity. If you are exporting from Zanzibar, confirm requirements directly with the Zanzibar authorities before relying on this guide.

Overview

Tanzania exports dried chilli/capsicum to a modest but growing set of markets. No dedicated Tanzanian chilli board exists — export runs through the general TanTrade/TBS/TPHPA (opens the official site in a new tab) food-crop framework, alongside the TanTrade/TASPA "Tanzania Spices Label" promotion initiative.

Who Can Export

General business registration, TIN registration and a food-crop export permit apply, since no dedicated chilli board or export licence exists.

Quality & Standards

A Tanzania Standard for chillies and capsicums (commonly cited as TZS 31, original 1979 edition with later revisions) and a separate chilli-oil specification are referenced across secondary sources, but could not be independently confirmed against a primary TBS document in current research. An East African Community fresh-chilli standard (EAS 332) covering minimum pungency has also been reported but not independently confirmed.

Phytosanitary & Food-Safety Requirements

A TPHPA (opens the official site in a new tab) phytosanitary certificate applies to chilli as a plant-product export. No chilli-specific pest/disease certification requirement is documented.

Certificate of Origin & Rules of Origin

An ordinary or preferential TNCC (opens the official site in a new tab) Certificate of Origin may be required depending on the buyer and destination market.

Customs & Clearance

Standard TANCIS clearance via a licensed Clearing and Forwarding Agent.

Buyer Document Pack

Commercial Invoice, Packing List, phytosanitary certificate, Certificate of Origin, and (for bagged/stored chilli) a Fumigation Certificate where the buyer or destination requires one.

Step-by-Step Export Process
